GC Football Media Day
By: Jordan Rowe

Georgetown, Ky.-It’s early. So early in fact,
the grass is still green and barely worn at Toyota Stadium.
The Tigers held their annual media day on Tuesday. And it’s tough
to get a reading on this Tiger football team. Though tabbed as
co-favorites in the Mid-South Conference (MSC) East Division alongside
Campbellsville University, the team returns just 6 seniors. And it
is also uncertain who will play quarterback this year.
Head
Coach Bill Cronin likes the effort he’s seen so far in camp, but is
still uncertain just how that will translate when the season rolls
around.
“We have a lot of energy right now, but it’s early in camp,” he said.
“I think if that will continue we can really increase our potential as a
football team. Right now, they are a lot of fun because they are
really into what we are doing. But the key is…how do you adjust to
things after some adversity, when things aren’t going your way?
I’ll wait and see how that comes out.”
It won’t be long now. Georgetown hosts Hanover College, a Division
III school, on Thursday, August 26 (a game that can be heard on 93.7
WRVG). Though just a scrimmage, the players are taking the game
seriously.
“We expect to win every time we step out on the field,” said junior
quarterback Kaelin Ammons. “And it’s just another stepping stone
to where we want to get.”
Cronin says Ammons is in consideration for the starting quarterback job,
vacated by Mike Lewis last year.
“I hope I am the starting quarterback,” he said. “I’ve been
waiting two years to get my shot at quarterback. I’ve been playing
wide receiver the last two. I think if I get a chance to get in
there, I think we can make some good things happen.”
Last year the team finished 7-4 overall and 4-2 in the MSC. The
last time the Tigers made the playoffs was 2006. But the
conference can’t forget the team’s history as a powerhouse in the NAIA,
winning championships in 2000 and 2001. Yet, Coach Cronin
questions their pick of Georgetown as co-favorites in the MSC East this
year.
“Don’t believe everything you read,” he said. “We were a very
average football team (last year).”
Ammons says the team is use to the pressure of being picked to win the
division.
“That’s every year,” he said. “We’re always picked to be at the
top of the MSC. We have that target on our backs. But we
just got to come out there and play as hard as we can. We have to
take it one game at a time.”
With a young team like last year, the sky is the limit for this team.
“We’ll be a competitive football team,” Cronin said. “We’ll go
against anybody. We’ll stick our nose in there and be as
aggressive as anyone. Even more aggressive than what we were a
year ago.”
Thursday will provide more answers for the coaching squad and the fans, who
must wait until September 30 for the next home game.
It’s early.
